Astronomy Club

TQG’s Astronomy Club is provided for people of all ages. Each meeting features a journey through the solar system in our StarDome Planetarium, an enlightening talk about an aspect of stargazing, children’s activities, a competition, and of course — weather permitting — a chance for some actual stargazing with our telescopes, with experts on-hand with advice.

  • Astronaut Training

    Please note that any children attending the Astronomy Club must be accompanied by an adult.

    With Timothy Peake set to become the first British astronaut to travel to the ISS in November 2015 this night will look at what training astronauts have to go through in order to go to space. The live Science show in the theatre will involve a range of physical and mental tasks that members of the public will be asked to participate in. The StarDome show will focus on what people on the space station can see and experience.
    Craft activities during the evening will be astronaut themed.

  • Geminids (Meteor Shower)

    Between the 8th and 17th of December the Geminids meteor shower is due to take place. It will be the richest shower of the year and many meteorites will be visible.
    The theme of this session will be about the Geminids and helping people to actually view a meteorite. In addition there will be a StarDome planetarium show based on the journey of a comet and the live theatre show will be based on comets.
    As usual there will also be hands on craft based activities related to meteors will be available during the evening.

  • Life in our Universe

    Please note that any children attending the Astronomy Club must be accompanied by an adult.

    The evening aims to show some of the evidence that, realistically, there could be for life in some form out in our Universe. This will include information about “the size of the universe” and infinity.
    The special live science show will tell how habitable the universe actually is with the StarDome show focussing on how far life has gone so far. This will cover Rover missions and potential future manned missions to Mars and further afield.
    Craft activities will be themed around life in the Universe.
